Putting safety first with First Aid!

Workplace First Aid obligations ...

All businesses have the responsibility in law to ensure the health, safety and welfare of their employees while at work. First Aid provision should be provided to allow immediate medical assistance should an accident or incident take place in your workplace environment. In some cases, that responsibility extends to other people who visit your workplace, such as contractors and customers.

Assessment of First Aid needs:
You will need to do an Assessment of Needs in order to identify what First Aid provisions are necessary and relevant to your particular workplace.
First aid provision must be ‘adequate and appropriate in the circumstances’. This means that you must provide sufficient first aid equipment (first aid kit), facilities and personnel at all times. This assessment will look at variables such as the number of employees you have, any shift patterns, number of locations/floors, what type of activities/risks etc.

Your Assessment of Needs is likely to result in a need for at least one or several qualified First Aiders, First Aid equipment and possibly the need to have dedicated First Aid spaces in your workplaces.

Visit the Health and Safety Executives website (
www.hse.gov.uk) for more information and to make sure you are meeting your obligations.

Choosing a training provider ...
Once you've identified a need, as a business, the onus is on you, to choose your training provider carefully and to undertake due diligence to ensure the trainer holds the necessary qualifications and their insurances are in place. At
First Aid Savvy, we are accredited by NUCO, which in turn is an approved centre with First Aid Awards Ltd (FAA). The FAA is an Ofqual and SQA regulated awarding organisation. To keep it simple, this means that the due diligence has already been done for you and you are guaranteed that the qualification achieved is a nationally regulated qualification that meets HSE approval.

So ... you've discovered that you do need qualified First Aiders!
Here's where First Aid Savvy can help ... we can come to you! If you have a suitable space, we can train up to 12 staff members at a time. This can prove to be very cost effective. If you have less than 4 delegates, it might be more cost effective for them to attend one of our open courses instead. Alternatively, you might like to share the training day with another business if that's appropriate. Please do get in touch and we can work out the best option for your particular needs.
